When Matosky purchased the apartment, he envisioned some modifications to suit the space to his needs. The primary transformation involved organizing the once-empty mezzanine into distinct functional zones: a bedroom, walk-in closet, full bathroom, and study. Strategically positioned, the bathroom volume serves as a divider between the private areas—the bedroom and walk-in closet—and the more open study space.

To further distinguish the bathroom volume, we conceived The Peg Wall, a floor-to-ceiling installation composed of 42,000 wooden dowels in 30 different lengths. The pegs shift organically across the wall, forming an undulating pattern that is both decorative and highly functional. These flowing waves adapt to create shelving, conceal an intricate piping system, and integrate a hidden bathroom door.

The installation of The Peg Wall was a hands-on collaboration with wood fabricator Bill Bancroft. Bill crafted a precise grid of ½-inch diameter holes in plywood panels and custom-cut the dowels to size. Me and my colleagues at Merge installed the dowels by hand—an immersive process that brought the vision to life.
